Modiolastrum lateritium

Modiolastrum lateritium is a delightful and somewhat uncommon addition to UK gardens, known for its semi-evergreen nature and resemblance to mallow plants. This perennial features a unique creeping growth habit, making it an excellent choice for vibrant ground cover. Its lobed, slightly hairy green leaves are borne on stems that spread and root as they go, creating lush mats that not only enhance the garden's aesthetic but also effectively suppress weeds. During the summer months, the plant showcases charming, cup-shaped flowers in a soft peachy-pink hue, each adorned with a striking dark pink halo encircling a golden centre, adding a splash of colour to any landscape.Thriving in the milder regions of the UK, Modiolastrum lateritium is also drought-tolerant, preferring well-draining, light soil. This makes it particularly suited for various garden settings, such as weaving through gravel gardens, covering dry banks, or edging sun-baked rockeries. Additionally, it can gracefully spill over patio containers, creating a cascading effect that enhances outdoor spaces. For those looking to add vertical interest, the plant can be trained to climb with the help of supports, offering versatility in garden design. Its ability to adapt to different environments while providing both beauty and practicality makes it a valuable choice for gardeners seeking to enrich their green spaces.Height: 50cm (20in).
