Hydrocotyle vulgaris (Marginal Aquatic)

Hydrocotyle vulgaris, a charming British native aquatic perennial, thrives in shallow waters or damp, boggy areas. This plant is known for its attractive, glossy, round leaves that feature scalloped edges, resembling miniature waterlily pads. It spreads out to form lush, creeping mats that not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of garden ponds but also serve practical purposes. Hydrocotyle vulgaris is particularly effective for underplanting taller aquatic plants, as it gracefully trails along the edges of ponds, effectively concealing the often unsightly pond liner. Additionally, it can float serenely on the water's surface, adding to the overall beauty of the aquatic landscape. In addition to its ornamental value, Hydrocotyle vulgaris contributes significantly to the health of aquatic ecosystems. During the day, its vibrant foliage produces oxygen, which is essential for maintaining water quality and supporting the diverse life forms within the pond, including fish and beneficial microorganisms. Furthermore, this hardy perennial plays a crucial role in controlling algae growth by competing for nutrients, thereby helping to keep the water clear and vibrant. By incorporating Hydrocotyle vulgaris into your pond or water garden, you not only enhance its visual appeal but also promote a balanced and thriving aquatic environment.Height 10cm (4in).
