Bright, jewel-like and built for alpine planting, Hutchinsia alpina is a low, spreading rock-garden gem that brings effortless spring sparkle to small spaces. This evergreen perennial forms a tight cushion of finely divided, deep green foliage, creating a soft carpet that stays attractive even outside its flowering season. From spring to early summer, it becomes generously studded with delicate sprays of crisp white blooms that lift just above the foliage, giving a luminous effect against stones, gravel or crevices. Naturally at home in rockeries, walls and troughs, it thrives in a neat, controlled habit that never overwhelms its neighbours, instead threading itself neatly through rocky pockets and edges. Tough yet dainty, it delivers long-lasting seasonal blooms while its creeping mats of ferny foliage offers a quiet presence year-round. Ultimate height: 10cm (4in).
