Craft your very own natural birdhouse with this intriguing gourd variety. Also known as Calabash or Bottle Gourd, Cucurbita lagenaria is a fast-growing vine that produces vibrant, green, bottle-shaped fruits. Once dried, these hollow fruits form a tough, waterproof shell that was traditionally used for everything from containers to water bottles, and even musical instruments. To grow this versatile gourd, train it up a sturdy trellis or fence, allowing the fruits to maintain their iconic bottle shape as they develop. If allowed to grow on the ground, the gourds will become flattened and misshapen. After harvesting, let the gourds dry fully before turning them into charming birdhouses?simply drill an access hole in the side and a drainage hole in the base, then hang them up for your feathered friends to enjoy. You can even paint the gourds for a decorative touch; once painted, they can last up to ten years, adding a rustic, handmade feel to your garden. Height: 200cm (72). Spread: 35cm (14).
