Carex riparia (Marginal Aquatic)

Greater Pond Sedge, or Carex riparia, is a robust, evergreen perennial that thrives in the UK, particularly in larger pond environments. This plant can grow impressively tall, reaching heights of up to 1.5 meters, and showcases long, stiff leaves that are a striking glaucous green. These leaves create a beautiful vertical element along pond edges and in bog gardens, making it a popular choice for those looking to enhance their outdoor spaces. From May to June, the plant produces distinctive, upright spikes adorned with dark brown flowers, which not only add a unique texture but also contribute to the overall aesthetic of the garden. One of the standout features of Greater Pond Sedge is its extensive rhizome system, which allows it to spread quickly and effectively. This characteristic makes it an excellent choice for stabilizing soil and preventing erosion, particularly in areas prone to water movement. Additionally, the dense growth of this sedge provides essential shelter and nesting materials for various wildlife, thereby promoting biodiversity in garden settings. By incorporating Carex riparia into your landscape, you not only enhance its visual appeal but also create a thriving habitat for local fauna, making it a win-win for both beauty and ecology.Height and spread: 1.5m (4.9ft).
