This distinctive Chinese astilbe forms a handsome mound of deeply textured, glossy foliage in dramatic shades of rich burgundy to near-black, creating exceptional interest well before the flowers appear. In midsummer, upright stems rise above the dark foliage carrying generous plumes of rosy-red buds that open into vibrant pink flowers. The striking contrast between the dark leaves and luminous blooms makes this perennial particularly effective in woodland-style planting, shaded borders and waterside schemes. The flowers are also excellent for cutting, while the architectural foliage continues to provide interest beyond the main flowering period.
